The Mi'kmaq (also Míkmaq, Micmac; in Quebec, Mi'gmaq) are a First Nations people indigenous to northeastern New England, Canada's Maritimes and the Gaspe Peninsula of Quebec. They have a population of about 20,000 of whom approximately one-third still speak the Algonquian Mi'kmaq language. In the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, October is deemed Mi'kmaq History Month.
