Mikhail Nikolayevich Muravyov, Count (1845-1900), Russian diplomat and statesman, known for his activities in the Russian Far East.


Mikhail Nikolayevich Muravyov, Russian diplomat and statesman, appointed Governor General of Lithuania by Alexander II of Russia. Muravyov was known as "hangman of Wilno" for his harsh policy of Russification after the Polish January Uprising of 1863. He instituted a complete ban on Latin alphabet and Lithuanian printed matter. The ban was lifted only in 1904.
