The Milky Way candy bar was created in 1923 by Frank Mars, the name being an obvious pun, like the Mars Bar and Galaxy chocolate. The name refers to two different chocolate bars, one sold in the United States and another sold in all other markets.

Worldwide, the Milky Way is a slab of whipped nougat (chocolate malt-flavored sweetened egg whites), covered in milk chocolate. In the United States, this is known as 3 Musketeers.

The US Milky Way is identical to the Mars bar sold in other countries, in which the nougat is thicker and topped with a layer of caramel.

Although manufacturer Mars Incorporated standardized many of its product names worldwide in the 1990s (for example, the Snickers bar was previously known as "Marathon" in the UK, and Twix was known as "Raider" in Germany and elsewhere), but the non-standard names of its US products did not change. However, in 2000 the US Mars bar, different from the worldwide product, was renamed Snickers Almond Bar, leaving open the possibility that the Mars and Milky Way names may yet be standardized.
