Minas Ithil - Definition and Overview

In the fiction of J. R. R. Tolkien, Minas Ithil ("Tower of the Moon" in Sindarin) was Gondor's watchtower in the east as Minas Anor was the watchtower in the west. In the time after the destruction of Númenor, the sons of Elendil, Isildur and Anárion, landed in Gondor. Isildur built Minas Ithil as his home, while Anarion built Minas Anor.

Sauron had Minas Ithil under his control for a short time until he was defeated by the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. Afterwards Minas Ithil was restored as a watchtower. In the Third Age, however, it was retaken by Sauron's minions, the Nazgûl, and renamed Minas Morgul ("Tower of Dark Sorcery").

Following the events of The Lord of the Rings, Minas Morgul was destroyed after the final defeat of Sauron. In time the city was rebuilt and Faramir, by then made prince by King Aragorn Elessar, and Éowyn lived there and Ithilien became known as a Princedom.
