Moshe Carmel - Definition

Moshe Carmel (January 17, 1911August 15, 2003) was born in Minsk, then in Russian Empire, now in Belarus. He emigrated to Palestine in 1924 when he was 13 years old. During the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, he was commander of the Carmeli Brigade, which was especially known for Operation Hiram.

From 1955 to 1977 he was a member of the Knesset, initially in the Ahdut ha-Avodah (Unity of Labour) party and later in the Labour Party. He served several terms as Transport Minister.
