Mother India (1957) is a Bollywood movie directed by Mehboob Khan. Nargis, playing a devoted wife and mother, struggles against famines, floods and an avaricious money lender for her own and her children's survival. The movie was a nominee for Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1957.
Nargis had long been romantically linked with director and actor Raj Kapoor, but in the end married Sunil Dutt, who co-starred with her in this movie. The marriage seemed scandalous to many at the time, because Sunil had played her son in the movie.
