Mount Nyiragongo is a dormant volcano in the Virunga Mountains associated with the Great Rift Valley or East African Rift. It is located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo some 19km north of the town of Goma and the Lake Kivu. The main crater is 250m deep, 2km wide and contains a lava lake. Many minor craters are spread around its flanks.
A stratovolcano, Mount Nyiragonga emits the fastest-flowing lava in the world.
It last erupted on January 17, 2002, displacing an estimated 400,000 people and desroying part of the town of Goma.
