Moussaka (melitzanes moussaka; Romanian: musaca; Turkish: musakka) is a traditional dish of the Balkans consisting of layers of ground (minced) lamb and sliced eggplant (aubergine) and tomato, topped with a savoury white sauce and baked.
There are variations on this basic recipe in several Mediterranean and Arab countries.
The word moussaka is believed to be of Arabic origin.
