Mudug - Definition and Overview

Mudug is a region (gobolka) in central Somalia. Its capital is Gaalkacyo. It is bordered by Ethiopia, the Somalian regions of Nugaal and Galguduud and the Indian Ocean.

The region's main inhabitants belong to the habargedir clan part of the hawiye clan family and affiliated clans inhabiting the lower half bordering the region of Galgadud.

The population of Mudug Region is nearly 1.5 million and 4/5 of them belonging to the hawiye clan. A great number of mudug people live in other parts of Somalia and foreign countries.

Politically, socially and economically the region is intergrated with mogadisho and neighbouring hawiye regions it also shares ties with extented family members of the darod clans living in neighbouring puntland region.
