MultiTorg Opera - Definition and Overview

MultiTorg Opera was the name used for the Opera browser in versions prior to 2.0. These versions (1.0 to 2.0) were not released to the public, although online documents (http://www.igd.fhg.de/archive/1995_www95/proceedings/posters/31/) show the browser at The Third International WWW Conference (http://www.igd.fhg.de/archive/1995_www95/) in 1995.

A few excerpts from the presention illustrate the path set out when developing the browser:

When a document is being read from a remote server, the user can view the parts of the document being read and follow links from the document without having to wait for it to finish being fetched. The user can also read other documents in separate windows.
The current version of MultiTorg Opera supports HTML 2.0. We intend to support HTML 3.0 when it is generally accepted. When parts of it become a standard, such as tables, we will support those parts.

These quotes illustrate how Opera is being developed with standards support in mind, rather than implementing technology features just because they seem useful. It also shows how Opera was, and still is, mindful of its users when creating the user interface.
