Myria- Myria-

Myria- - Definition

Myria is an obsolete prefix in the SI system of units that denoted a factor of 10+4 (ten thousand, 10,000). Its symbol was ma.

The prefix came from the Greek μύριοι (mýrioi), meaning both ten thousand and "an indefinite large number". There is no Latin equivalent. Adopted by the French in 1795, it was not retained when the SI prefixes were agreed internationally by the 11th CGPM in 1960.

It is still sometimes used a prefix for constructing words:

Obsolete SI prefixes
10n Prefix Symbol Number name Decimal equivalent
104 myria ma Myriad (ten thousand) 10 000
10−4 myrio mo Myriadth (ten thousandth) 0.000 1
Also obsolete are double prefixes, such as those formerly used in micromicrofarads, hectokilometres, micromillimetres, etc.
