NLO is non-linear optics. This describes an effect where linear input results in non-linear output. Commonly used in optical switches and optical computers as well as other fields.
One method uses 30volts acrosst a long length of LiNO material, to change a light beams polarization, depending on whether the device is switched "on" or "off" electrically. This is described as electro-optical switching of light.
