Narendra Damodardas Modi has been the chief minister of the state of Gujarat in India since October 7, 2001. He was born on September 17, 1950 in Vadnagar town of, Mehsana district of Gujarat, He represents the right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party, and unusually for Gujarat Chief Ministers does not belong to the upper-caste Patel or Kshatriya castes.
He became the 14th Chief Minister of Gujarat when Keshubhai Patel resigned from office following the loss of 2 Assembly bypolls and 1 Lok Sabha seat.
Modi is one of the most controversial politicians in India owing due to his percieved and strong anti-Muslim and anti-Christian bias. He was allegedly deeply involved in pogroms against Muslims in 2002, following a train fire that killed numerous Hindu activists returning from ayodhya. (The fire was blamed on Islamic terror.) His anti-semitism has not hurt his party in Gujarat, where he has consistently led his party to big electoral victories.
