The National University of San Marcos (in Spanish Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos) is a public university in Lima, Perú.

Is the oldest university in South America, and one of the oldest in the Western Hemisphere. Also called UNMSM by its meaning from spanish name (Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos). The current campus its situated in Downtown Lima district part of Historic Center of Lima zone. The entrance examination test needed to enter UNMSM is the among the highest universities as same the largest and most influential university in Perú.

History

The public institution was founded on 12 May of 1551. Prior to the foundation of the university the dominican priests on Cuzco and Lima, Perú were those who were interested on the scholastic study of the arts and theology, considered the most important knowledge during spanish renaissance in the 16th century in order to prepare and educate the beginning monks.
However the increase to higher learning needed on newly Spanish conquered territories in America, determined to Fray Thomas of Saint Martin to request the foundation of a university on Lima also known as City of the Kings. This proposal from the catholic priest was well accepted and received a significant support from early Lima habitants. As consecuence of this it were named two representatives one civilian an the other one from the church, those were finally determined a well organization of the request in which lead the stablishment of the university. Which was made by Royal Signature by Charles I of Spain on Valladolid on 12 May of 1551. Entered in operation on 2 January of 1553 on the Del Rosario Convent of the Dominican Order, the original professors were Andrés Cianca and the sent by the spanish crown scholar Corona D. Cosme Carrillo.
During the viceroyalty in Peru five were the original faculties on the university. Theology and Arts, then it were added Laws and Medicine that began operation on the 17th century.
With the independece in 1821 until the 1960's the number increased to ten. With the Law of Public Instruction in Peru in 1850 two faculties were created Mathematics and Natural Sciences that later merged in 1862 by the name of Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. By 1876 the name changed again to Faculty of Sciences. On the same year it was created the Faculty of Economics and Commerce.
On the 19th century the faculties increased to six as described. In the 20th century changes came to Saint Mark with the addition of five new faculties in Science field these were: Pharmacy , Biochemistry, Dentistry, Veterinarian Medicine, and Chemistry, and on Social Sciences were Education. Theology adquired a different part of knowledge on Saint Mark and by was 1935 finally closed. On 1969 it were only three faculties that came from the early spanish regime, these were Literature and Human Sciences (Arts), Laws and Medicine.
National University of Saint Mark is one with continuosly operation whitout any interruption. From its beginning with Fray John Baptist of La Roca until today it were 210 rectors that handled the fate of Saint Mark.

Campus

Saint Mark University since its foundation throughout the ages were based in five campuses, three during the 16th until the first half of the 19th century and later in the second half of the 19th century until 1960's, and from 1961 until today in the modern campus called the Universitarian City in which nowadays University continues in operation.
Historically because of development of Lima during Industrial revolution of the 19th century the Faculty of Medicine was the only one was based out from the Main Campus located in Downtown Lima because to the Hospitals and Morgues that were receintly innagurated at that time. Is often but not officially called the second campus of Saint Mark.
Until nowadays this faculty continues being part of Saint Mark and the only one stablished out from main Campus.
The first place in which the university was based was in the Convent of Del Rosario from the Dominican Order, the second was stablished on the former Convent of Saint Augustine Order. On 1575 was moved to the Plaza of Estanque later called of Inquisition, in which nowadays it is located the Congress of Peru building. Later was changed to the Church of Saint Charles in which was built the 19th century building of the university later called from its park surrounding the Universitarian Park very famous nowadays on Lima, Peru because of its bushes and Town Clock from a donation from german immigrants.Finally on 1960's was moved to the modern complex of Universitarian City located in Downtown Lima.

Organization

Gobernment of university it has varied throughout the centuries, originally assisted by bishops. With enlightenment and reforms from spanish Bourbon dynasty changed.
