The National University of Singapore's (NUS) flagship campus is located in the southwest of the Republic of Singapore, bounded by the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE), Clementi Road, Buona Vista Road and Kent Ridge Park. The university traces its origins to the founding of The Straits Settlements and Federated Malay States Government Medical School in 1905, a realisation of a dream made known by the city's founder, Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, way back in 1823. The present institution was formed with the merger of the University of Singapore and Nanyang University in 1980.

The university was listed as one of the best universities in Asia by AsiaWeek magazine (now defunct). In late 2004, NUS was rated 18th in a new global ranking of universities by The Times Higher Education Supplement (The Times Higher) published by The Times, one of only 3 Asian universities (the University of Tokyo and Beijing University ) to be rated among the top 20. The university was also rated as one of the top 10 universities in the faculty-level ranking in engineering and sciences. With the university vision of "Towards a Global Knowledge Enterprise", the NUS strikes to provide a balanced, quality education, and to encourage scholarship at the highest level.

NUS has 13 faculties and schools, and is presently still the most broad-based tertiary institution in the country in terms of course diversity.
