The Native peoples of Quebec total 11 distinct nations. The 10 Amerindian nations and the Inuit nations number 71 415 people and account for approximately 1% of Quebec's population.
Inuit
The Inuit communities of Quebec are located in the northern most part of the province, in an area known as Nunavik.
Amerindians
The Abenakis live in two communities named Odanak (near Trois-Rivières) and Wolinak (near Sorel). They number approximately 1,900 people.
The Algonquins, who refer to themselves as Anishinabeg, live in 9 communities located in the Outaouais and Abitibi-Témiscamingue regions of Quebec. These communities are:
- Grand-Lac-Victoria
- Hunter's Point
- Kebaowek
- Kitigan Zibi
- Lac-Rapide
- Lac-Simon
- Pikogan
- Témiscamingue
- Winneway
The Algonquins number approximately 8,600 people.
The Atikameks (sometimes Atikamekws) live in 4 communities located in the Mauricie region of Quebec. These communities are:
- Coucoucache
- Manouane
- Obedjiwan
- Weymontachie
The Atikamek number approximately 4,900 people.
The Crees are the most populous nation in the algonquian family. The majority live in Quebec and Ontario, but they are also to be found in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. There are 9 Cree communities in northern Quebec. They are:
- Chisasibi
- Eastmain
- Mistissini
- Nemiscau
- Ouje-Bougoumou
- Waskaganish
- Waswanipi
- Wemindji
- Whapmagoostui
The Crees of Quebec number approximately 13,000 people.
The Malecites live in 2 communities located in the Bas-St-Laurent region of Quebec. The communties are Cacouna and Whitworth. They number approximately 570 people.
The Micmac live in the Canadian maritimes and the Quebec region of Gaspesia. In Quebec, they number approximately 4,300 people and live in 3 communities:
- Gaspé
- Gesgapegiag
- Listuguj
The Innus (formerly the Montagnais) live in 11 communities located in the Cote-Nord region of Quebec. These communties are:
- Betsiamites
- Essipit
- Lac-John
- La Romaine
- Maliotenam
- Mashteuiatsh
- Matimekosh
- Mingan
- Natashquan
- Pakuashipi
- Uashat
The Innus number 13,800 people.
The Naskapis live in Northern Quebec. They have one community called Kawawachikamach. They number approximately 570 people.
The Naskapis are recognized as a distinct nation by the goverment of Quebec and Canada, however, they are often considered to be Innus living in a remote area.
The Huron-Wendats live just outside Quebec City in Wendake. Their original homeland was in Ontario. They number about 2,800 people.
The Mohawks of Quebec number approximately 13,000 people. They live in the four following communities:
