The Natuna Islands are a small archipelago of Indonesia, located in the South China Sea between east and west Malaysia, Kalimantan and Singapore. The islands are part of the Riau Islands province. There are 272 islands. The population is around 90,000.
Natuna has large reserve of natural gas that are exported to countries such as Singapore. However, most of the locals work as fishermen or farmers. There is no real tourist industry.
The main island is called Pulau Natuna Besar or Ranai and is known for its coral and the highest mountain in the archipelago: Gunung Ranai.
The island Panjang (in Indonesian language: Pulau Panjang) is known for its turtle population.
