Naumburg is at least 1,000 years old. A castle (Schönburg) overlooks the town and the Saale River. The town is in a wine-growing region, with numerous vineyards in the surrounding area.

One of the most significant composers for the organ in Renaissance Germany, Elias Ammerbach, was born in Naumburg in 1530.
