NCIS is a CBS network television series about a team of special agents from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service who investigate crimes involving Navy and Marine Corps personnel. The concept and characters were initially introduced in a two part episode of the CBS series JAG. The show premiered in September 2003. Originally titled "Navy: NCIS", it was renamed after the first season for accuracy and simplicity.

Main Characters

  • Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), the main character on the show. He is a very skilled investigator and interrogator, and he uses these skills to his advantage while working on a case.
  • Agent Anthony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly), a streetwise homicide detective.
  • Agent Kate Todd (Sasha Alexander), a former Secret Service agent who often questions authority, Gibbs included.
  • Agent Timothy McGee (Sean Murray), A young agent, making DiNozzo feel nervous about his job.

Supporting Cast

  • Forensic scientist Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette), who is best known for her gothic style of dress.
  • Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard (David McCallum), a medical examiner who assists the team.

Controversy involving the show

While the show is factually accurate in many areas, it has been criticized for the sheer number of gunfights the main characters engage in. For several consecutive episodes in the first season, one or more of the suspects were inevitably killed by the 9mm SIG-Sauer-wielding NCIS agents. In reality, most police officers will go their entire career without discharging their weapon.
