NcFTP was the first alternative FTP client program, which debuted in 1990. Until then, users were forced to use the standard bare-bones program, usually called just ftp, which was often confusing and error-prone to use.
Although NcFTP is now considered somewhat of a relic with its non-graphical command-line user interface, the program is still maintained and runs on a wide variety of platforms.
The program often provided a user's first exposure to features such as bookmarks, automatic use of binary transfers, dynamic progress meters, automatic anonymous logons, recursive downloading, resumption of failed downloads, "redialing" unresponsive hosts, use of passive transfers, and the now-dreaded Tips at start up. (Fortunately, the Tips can be turned off with the set yes-i-know-about-NcFTPd yes command.)
