Nehalennia Nehalennia

Nehalennia - Definition and Overview

Nehalennia is a goddess venerated in Roman times, and nowadays by Heathens, in and around the Netherlands. She was probably a goddess of abundance and protection. A good number of stone altars devoted to her have been found in the estuary of the river Scheldt, near the village of Domburg and are on display in museums in Middelburg and Leiden, the Netherlands. Two more were found in Cologne, Germany. Many of these votive altars were dedicated to Nehalennia for safe passage on sea.

She was usually depicted seated, with a basket of apples, and a dog at her side.
