Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,228 km² (474 mi²). 1,223 km² (472 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.41% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 14,445 people, 5,887 households, and 4,144 families residing in the county. The population density is 12/km² (31/mi²). There are 8,554 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (18/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 82.65% White, 14.89% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.62% from other races, and 1.35% from two or more races. 2.11% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 5,887 households out of which 27.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.70% are married couples living together, 10.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.60% are non-families. 25.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
