NetBEUI NetBEUI

NetBEUI - Definition and Overview

NetBEUI (pronounced net-booey) is an acronym for NetBIOS Extended User Interface. It is an enhanced version of the NetBIOS protocol used by network operating systems such as LAN Manager, LAN Server, Windows for Workgroups, Windows 95 and Windows NT. Systek developed NetBIOS for the IBM PC Network. NetBEUI was extended by IBM for their PC LAN Program and Microsoft for MS-NET in 1985. Later in 1987 Microsoft and Novell extended it for their network operating systems LAN Manager and Netware.

In former times and in IBM terminology the protocol was called NetBIOS. NetBEUI has mostly been replaced by TCP/IP in modern networking.
