Newry and Mourne District Council is a Local Council in Northern Ireland covering an area including much of the south of County Armagh and the south of County Down and has a population of 87,000. Council headquarters are in Newry, the largest city in the area with a population of 28,850. Other towns in the Local Council area include Crossmaglen and Bessbrook in County Armagh and Warrenpoint, Rostrevor, Hilltown, Annalong and Kilkeel (an important fishing port) in County Down.

The Newry and Mourne District Council area consists of 5 electoral areas: Crotlieve, Fews, Newry Town, Slieve Gullion and The Mournes. At the elections of 2001 30 members were elected from the following political parties: 13 Sinn Fein, 10 Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP), 4 Ulster Unionist Party (UUP), 2 Independent and 1 Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).The current Council Chairman is Councillor Henry Reilly (UUP) and the Vice Chairman is Councillor John Feehan (SDLP).

The next election is due to take place in May 2005.
