Newton Heath - Definition and Overview

Newton Heath is an area of Greater Manchester, famous primarily for two things:

  1. The birthplace of Newton Heath Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Football Club (est. 1878), later to become Manchester United. An old nickname for the team was "the Heathens" - clearly derived from their original name, this in turn spawned "The Red Devils".
  2. Manchester rhyming slang for "teeth".
