Nghe An province is located in Northern part of Central midland of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam at the co-ordinates from 18° 33’10’’ to 19° 24’43’’ latitude north and from 103° 52’53’’ to 105° 45’50’’ longitude east.

+ To the North of the province is the Thanh Hoa province with the administrative border of 196,13 km in length.

+ To the south of the province is the Ha Tinh province with the administrative border of 92,6 km in length. + To the West of the province is the Laos with the country border of 419 km. + To the East of the province is the Eastern Sea with the coastal line of 82 km. + The square area is 1.648.729 km2. + The population year 2002 is 2.963.572 the population density of 179 persons/ km2.

Nghe An has 1 city grade 2, 1 town and 17 districts which are: Vinh city, Cua Lo town, 10 mountainous districts: Thanh Chuong, Ky Son, Tuong Duong, Con Cuong, Anh Son, Tan Ky, Que Phong, Quy Chau, Quy Hop, Nghia Dan ; 7 delta districts: Do Luong, Nam Dan, Hung Nguyen, Nghi Loc, Dien Chau, Quynh Luu, Yen Thanh.

Topogrphy

Nghe An province is located on the North East of Truong Son range, with complicated topography, divided by hills, mountains, rivers and streams slanting from North- West to South- East , the highest peak is Pulaileng (2,711 m) in Ky Son district, the lowest is Quynh Luu, Dien Chau, Yen Thanh where the altitude is only 0,2m above the sea level (Quynh Thanh commune, Quynh Luu district).

Mountainous and hilly lands cover 83% natural area of the whole province.

Climate – Weather

The province is located in the tropical monsoon area, directly affected by the South West hot dry seasonal winds (during April- August) and the North East wet and cold seasonal winds (during November- March). In 2001: - The annual average temperature is 25,15oC.

- Annual rainfall is 1.665,9 mm lower 2000 is 234,5 mm. Highest is 2228 mm in Vinh city and lowest is 1312 mm in Tay Hieu.

- Average humidity is 85%, lowest is 33% in Tay Hieu.

- The average sunny hours per year is 1.413 hours, lower 2000 is 25 hours.

Revers and streams

Total length of rivers and streams in the province is 9.828 km, the average density: 0,6-0,7 km/km2. The biggest river is Ca River rises from Muong Pec district (Xieng Khoang, Laos) with 532 km of length (of which 361 km of length in the Nghe An province), basin area: 27.200 km2 (of which 17.730 km2 in Nghe An).

The interlacing system of rivers and streams is an advantage to develop the water transport that diversifies the passengers and cargoes transport Sea and the Coast

Territorial sea is 4.230 leagues, from 40 metered depth back the seabed is quite flat, from 40 metered depth there is reef, sand dune. Nghe An’s territorial waters have a good number of sea products with high economic value. Cua Lo beach is a beautiful, attractive one. It is the advantage for the development of Nghe An tourism industry.

Nghe An coastal line is of 82 km long with 6 estuaries and convenient for marine transport and sea port development and salt producing activities (about 1000 ha).
