Synopsis

When their car breaks down, honeymooners Don and Pat Carter find themselves stranded in a small town in Ohio. To pass the time, they go to a cafe to have lunch, but Don quickly becomes obsessed with a fortune-telling device at their booth that seems to be truly prescient. Thanks to his determined wife, he is able to break free of the machine, but another couple proves not so lucky.

Themes

Matheson's warning to not use superstitious beliefs and mystical concepts as substitutes for self-confidence. An opposing theme is offered in The Old Man in the Cave.
