Nicola Pisano - Definition

Nicola Pisano (c. 1220-1278) was an Italian sculptor whose work is noted for its classical Roman sculptural style. Pisano is sometimes considered to be the founder of modern sculpture. Pisano was probably trained in the Italian workshops of the Holy Roman emperor Frederick II.

His work includes:

  • Carved reliefs for the pulpit of the Pisa Baptistery (1260). The panels of the pulpit are strongly influenced by antique sarcophagi.
  • A marble pulpit for the Duomo in Siena (1265-68)
  • Fonte Maggiore in Siena (1278)

His son Giovanni Pisano was also a sculptor. Giorgio Vasari included a biography of Nicola Pisano in his Lives.
