Nigel Godrich - Definition and Overview |
|
|
Nigel Godrich (born in the UK in 1972) is a recording engineer and record producer. He is best known for his work with the English alternative band Radiohead. He has also worked as engineer, producer or mixer, with Travis, Beck, Pavement, Air, Neil Finn, Natalie Imbruglia, Silver Sun, The Sundays, U2, The Beta Band, and R.E.M..
His latest work is with the Band Aid 20 project, featuring collaborations from Supergrass' Danny Goffy, sir Paul McCartney, also Radiohead's members Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood, including Britpop pioneers Blur's Damon Albarn, Oasis' Noel Gallagher and Coldplay's Chris Martin, also Bono of U2, Sugababes and others.
Nigel is sometimes credited as the "sixth member" of Radiohead and is given much credit for his work in the Oxford band. His first contributions were on the songs of My Iron Lung EP like "Permanent Daylight", "the Trickster" and "Lewis (Mistreated)". Then he engineered Radiohead's 2nd LP The Bends, co-produced "Black Star" from the same album and produced "Talk Show Host" ("Street Spirit" b-side and a fan-favourite).
Since then he has been the permanent producer of every album of the band, and considering the band's success and undying popularity, Godrich deserves respect for defining the band's significant sound. It's hard to underestimate his talent and mastery in producing Radiohead most acclaimed work. He helped the band establish as one the most acclaimed in the world and a seminal act of the 90s, taking the torch of U2 and R.E.M..
