Nigerian hip hop - Definition and Overview

Hip hop is a cultural movement composed of four parts: breakdancing, graffiti art, rapping and DJing. It spread to much of Africa, including Nigeria, in the 1980s. Breakdancing was particularly popular.

In the 1990s, groups like The Trybesmen ("Trybal Marks" (1999)) and Plantashion Boiz became a part of mainstream Nigerian music after the collapse of pop trends like Yo-pop.

The African Beatz magazine, based out of Nigeria, is a prominent African hip hop publication.
