Nikolayev - Definition and Overview

Mykolayiv (Миколаїв) is a city in Southern Ukraine, the center of the Mykolayivs'ka oblast'. It sits at the confluence of the Southern Bug and Ingul rivers. Its population, as of 2001, was 514,000.

Mykolaiv is a center of ship building of Ukraine (and, earlier, of the whole Soviet Union) and an important riverport. Other important industries are mechanical engineering, power engineering, metal-fabricating; among consumer goods industry: clothing, cosmetics, knitting, leather and foot-wear, food processing. The city has 3 major shipbuilding yards some of which capable of building large navy ships such as aircraft carriers. As a matter of fact, almost entire ex-Soviet Union aircraft carrier fleet was build there. The city is surrounded by extremely fertile chernozem fields that facilitate good agriculture.

The town was founded in 1789 when the Governor General of the Novorossiya Knyaz Potemkin founded a ship-building wharf on the Ingul river.

It is important to not confuse this city with the same-named Ukrainian town in L'vivs'ka oblast'.
