Nitroamine Nitroamine

Nitroamine - Definition and Overview

Nitroamines are organic compounds that contain the chemical group R2N-NO2. Examples of nitroamines are the explosives HMX, cyclotrimethylene trinitramine, and tetryl. Nitroamines are not to be confused with nitrosamines (with an 's').

Despite their amine group they are not basic due to the electron withdrawing effect of the nitro group. Secondary nitroamines of the structure R-NH-NO2 are actually weak organic acids with a pKa of around 5.6.
