Nocardiosis - Definition and Overview

Nocardiosis is an infectious disease affecting either the lungs (pulmonary nocardiosis) or the whole body (systemic nocardiosis). It is due to infection by either Nocardia asteroides or Nocardia brasiliensis. The risk is greatly increased by immune suppression.

Identification

Nocardia is a partially acid-fast organism. It was discovered by French veterinarian and microbiologist Edmond Nocard.

Symptoms

• night sweats, fever, cough
• it is more severe in immunocompromised individuals

X-Ray

• infiltration and pleural effusion are seen

Treatment

• Co-trimoxazole
• Surgical resection and drainage
