Noel Treacy - Definition and Overview

Noel Treacy (b.December 18, 1951), is an Irish Fianna Fáil politician. He is currently the Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Noel Treacy was born in Ballinasloe, County Galway. He was educated at Gurteen National School and St. Joseph's College, Garbally Park in Ballinasloe. He worked as an auctioneer and financial services manager before entering public life. He was first elected to Dáil Éireann in 1982 and has been re-elected ever since.

Over 14 years Treacy has held a number of junior ministerial portfolios including:

  • 1987-1988: Minister of State at the Department of Finance with responsibilities for the Office of Public Works and the Central Development Committee.
  • 1988-1989: Minister of State at the Department of the Taoiseach. In other words Treacy became the State's first Minister for Heritage Affairs.
  • 1989-1991: Minister of State for Children at the Department of Health.
  • 1991-1992: Minister of State at the Department of Justice with resonsibility for Law Reform.
  • 1992-1993: Minister of State at the Department of Finance with responsibilities for the Office of Public Works and the Central Development Committee.
  • 1993-1994: Minister of State at the Departments of the Taoiseach, Finance, Transport, Energy and Communications, with responsibility for Energy and Enterprise.
  • 1997-2002: Minister for Science, Technology and Commerce at the Departments of Enterprise, Trade & Employment and Education & Science.
  • 2002-2004: Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture & Food, with responsibility for Food and Horticulture.

Following Taoiseach Bertie Ahern's Cabinet reshuffle in September of 2004, Treacy was appointed Minister of State at the Departments of Foreign Affairs and the Taoiseach, with special responsibility for European Affairs.
