Norland, Ontario - Definition

Norland is a small rural district in the larger City of Kawartha Lakes, Ontario.

With a population of under 1,000 there has been growing stagnation in business with several shops opening, closing or restructuring over the years.

Features

  • Large mural featuring a nature scene with animals and native people located on the largest building in town situated at the crossroads of Hwy 35 and Hwy 48
  • Elliot Falls, a hydroelectric power generating station that provides Norland with electricity.
  • "The falls" a falls and dam right near the town centre.
  • The Old School, the building which now houses the public library, used to also be the municipal building for the tri-township of Laxton-Digby-Longford. The Townships no longer exist since the amalgamation of Victoria County into the City.

Norland was once mentioned on NBC's Late Night with Conan O'Brien when the show was in Toronto for a week, Mike Myers mentioned the town by name including the only still operating gas station and a resident of Norland.

Matters of controversy in Norland

Since the Amalgamation, the Norland volunteer Fire Department's efforts to secure funding for a new fire engine have sputtered out. This has caused some unrest.

There exists a minor situation within the town about the owners of the three convienience stores. All three of the businesses are owned by non-related families of Korean descent. It is not uncommon for the eldery more conservative citizens of the town to go to neighbouring Coboconk, Ontario to purchase their goods. The newest store located on the four corners is recognized as the most trusted as the family running the store are considered friendly and kind. The youth of the town also consider the newer store to be the favourite in the town.

Recent news in Norland

The traffic lights installed during the autumn have finally been completed. It is expected that the current ward counciller will use this change in Norland in the next city election. The traffic lights had been requested for at least a decade.
