North Toronto is the northern section of the old, pre-amalgamation City of Toronto, though it currently occupies a central location within the new city boundaries. It is a roughly narrow strip, centred around Yonge Street, and running from Davisville Avenue north to Blythwood Road. It was incorporated as a town in 1890, when much of the area's land was still farmland. It was later annexed by the City of Toronto in 1912. It was during this time that a streetcar line was built along Yonge Street, making North Toronto the northernmost stop on the line. North Toronto soon emerged as a popular streetcar suburb, with the area becoming completely developed by the 1940s. Today, North Toronto is a relatively affluent community, which is very popular with young families.
