During the reorganisation of the Indian Railways system in 1952 was born the North Eastern Railway, NER, by amalgamating the Assam Railway and Avadh-Tirhut Railway. In 1958, to better serve the needs of the exceedingly beautiful seven sisters of the Indian northeast, the Northeast Frontier Railway, NFR, was carved out of the North Eastern Railway. Head quartered in Maligaon, Guwahati, the capital of the state of Assam it is responsible for rail operations in the entire Northeast and parts of West Bengal and Bihar. It is divided into 5 divisions:
- Tinsukia
- Lumding
- Rangiya
- Alipurdaur
- Katihar
The area of NF Railways operations is characterised by exceptional beauty and at the same time by some of the most arduous terrain. 70% is hilly terrain; the least proportion of hills being in Assam with 20% and Manipur bringing up the other extreme with 90% of its terrain being hilly.
This difficult terrain is reflected in that the only state with a decent rail network is Assam. Here too the rail lines are antiquated with speeds at some sections being limited to a maximum of 30 km/h. Not only do lines need conversion to broad gauge but also great potential exists for development of new lines.
