 Northern Bank - Definition

Northern Bank, is a commercial bank, part of the National Australia Bank group. The bank is considered as one of the Big Four in Northern Ireland.

Until 1988, the bank was a subsidary of the Midland Bank. In 1987, the bank's operations in the Republic of Ireland was re-organised into a separate subsidary called Northern Bank (Ireland) Limited. In 1988, Northern Bank was acquired by National Australia Bank, upon which the operations in the Republic of Ireland were renamed National Irish Bank. Northern Bank then introduced a new logo, a stylised "N" in a hexagon shape. In 2002, the banks logotype (the word "Northern") was changed to match that of the National Australia Bank.

In 2004, Danske Bank agreed to acquire Northern Bank (and National Irish Bank) for GBP 967m. The Northern Bank brand is expected to be retained. Don Price will remain as CEO.

On 21 December 2004, it was announced that the money centre at the bank's headquarters in Belfast had suffered a robbery of 26.5 million pounds the day before, which would make it one of the biggest bank robberies in British history. The Provisional Irish Republican Army has been accused by police as being responsible. The bank subsequently announced that it would recall all £300 million worth of its banknotes in denominations of ten pounds or more and reissue them in different colours with a new logo and new prefixes to the serial numbers.
