Established in 1788 in Inverness, today the Northern Meeting is best known for its bagpiping competition in September. These competitions are the most prestigious solo events in the piping world. The most famous competition is the piobrochead competition, which is organized in a unique way.
The third highest honor in this competition is the gold medal, which can be won by any piper. The second highest honor is the silver medal, which can only be won by a piper who has already won the gold medal in a previous year. The highest honor, the Clasp, can only be won by a piper who has already won the silver medal.
