Hip hop is a cultural movement which originated among African Americans in the New York City. It spread to all of Scandinavia, including Norway, in the early 1980s. With breakdancing and graffiti art growing increasingly popular, a number of underground hip hop musicians gained fame among the genre's limited fanbase. These included Tommy Tee, who later began a prominent hip hop magazine Fat Cat and a radio show The National Rap Show, Dream of Utopia and Valuable Scamps.
In the late 90s and into the next decade, performers like Opaque and Gatas Parlament became prominent.
