Numata - Definition and Overview

Numata (沼田市; Numatashi) is a city located in Gunma prefecture, Japan. It is located in northern Gunma, bordered by Mt. Akagi and Mt. Hotaka. The kanji for Numata approximately mean "boggy field."

In 2003 the city had an estimated population of 45,932 and a population density of 336.97 persons per km². The total area is 136.31 km².

The city was founded on 1 April 1954. The city will merge with two of the surrounding villages (Shirasawa Village and Tone Village) in April 2005.
