ORF - Definition and Overview

ORF is the National Austrian Broadcasting Corporation. The ORF dominates Austrian media, Austria was the last country in Europe after Albania to allow national private television. ORF broadcasts its prime-time news on both channels at the same time reaching a market penetation of two thirds. ORF was long ruled by proporz and is nowadays considered to be controlled by the current government.

Radio stations

The ORF radio stations are broadcasted terrestrial and via the digital program of the Astra satellite system. ORF is also an international broadcaster, originally on shortwave.

Television stations

The ORF television channels are broadcasted terrestrial and via the digital programme of the Astra satellite system. Via satellite ORF1 and ORF2 are encrypted allowing only Austrian citizens and payers of the Austrian broadcasting fees (GIS) to watch them. The ORF also offers an additional Free-To-Air (FTA) version of ORF2 television channel called ORF Europe.
