October Sky is a 1999 movie based off of the experiences of Homer Hickam's experiences with model rockets in his early life. This movie traces the life of four boys in Coalwood, West Virginia in 1957. Homer falls in love with rockets when he sees the Soviet satellite Sputnik fly in the sky. He wants to escape the coal mining life and work with rockets, but his father is in his way. With great disapproval from his father, Homer enters the science fair and wins scholarships for college. This movie is based on the book Rocket Boys written by Homer Hickam.
