Odeska oblast’ (Ukrainian: Одеська область) is an oblast' (region) of south-western Ukraine. Its capital is Odessa. It includes the historical teritory of southern Bessarabia (or Budjak), north of the Danube River, which was annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940 from Romania, in accord with the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. The area of the region is 33,300 km²; its population (as of 2004-05-01) is 2.4 million people. Notable Romanian/Moldovan, Bulgarian and Greek minorities reside in the province.
