Ogmios Ogmios

Ogmios - Definition and Overview

In Irish mythology, Ogma was the god of scholars, education, writing and eloquence. He was a son of Danu and Dagda and a member of the Tuatha Dé Danann. He invented the early Irish alphabet called Ogham.

He was killed at the Second Battle of Mag Tuireadh after taking away Balor's sword.

In Roman Gaul, according to Lucian, Ogmios was styled after the Greek god Heracles. In art, he was depicted as an old man with a bald head and wearing a lion's skin. This connection between eloquence and physical power is thought to be indicative of the importance of oral communication in pre-literate Celtic society.

Alternative versions of his name include Ogmios (Gaul), and Ogmios Sun-Face.

Ogma is also the handle of one of the head developers ("immortals") on the well-known DartMUD multi-user environment. [[Category:Tuatha Dé Danann]
