Ogun State, Nigeria - Definition and Overview

Ogun State, Nigeria was created in February 1976 from the former Western region. Abeokuta is the state capital. The state contains twenty Local Government Areas, the major ones being Abeokuta, Ijebu Ode, Ifo, Ota, and Sagamu. The 1991 census recorded a total population of 2,338,570 residents.The state Governor is Gbenga Daniel.

Abeokuta is the birthplace of Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo, who also has a large farm in Ota.

The ethnic composition of Ogun State is largely from the Yoruba subgroups of the Awori, Egba, Egbado, Ijebu, and Remo.
