The Ohio and Erie Canal was built in the 1800's and connected the Ohio River at Portsmouth and Lake Erie at Ohio Ohio. While it was later replaced by the railroads, it provided early transportation to outside markets for Ohio products and helped the state develop. While the canal closed for good in 1913 and parts have been filled in and used for other purposes, there has been a renewal of interest in the canal in Northeast Ohio with the creation of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail.
