Oliver Wood - Definition

Oliver Wood is a fictional character in the Harry Potter books who is played by Sean Biggerstaff in the film adaptions. Wood was the captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team in the first three books, but he left Hogwarts at the end of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Wood was very determined to win the Quidditch cup and had a reputation for working the team too hard, which he well deserved. He was more concerned with winning than the well-being of his team, doing such things as making them practice in the pouring rain and telling Harry to "get the Snitch or die trying."

When Harry joined the team as the youngest Seeker in a century, he thought the cup was in the bag. Due to unfortunate coincidences, the Gryffindor team failed to win the cup during Harry's first two years: Harry was unconscious in the hospital wing during the final match his first year and Quidditch was cancelled the following year due to the opening of the Chamber of Secrets. The next year, Wood's final at the school, Gryffindor finally won. Wood appeared briefly the following year and explained he'd been taken onto the reserve team for Puddlemere United.
