Oneşti is a city in Bacău county, Romania with a population of 51,681 inhabitants. Its claim to fame is being the birthplace of gymnast Nadia Comăneci.
History
The city was founded in 14 December, 1458. In 1965, its name was changed to Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej, a name which was changed back to Oneşti in 1990, after the downfall of the Communist regime.
The name of the city comes from Stefan the Great's daughter name (Oana), whom the lands, once, belonged to.

The mayor of the city is currently Emil Lemnaru.
Geography
Oneşti is located in the Tazlău-Caşin Depression at an altitude of 175 m. It is situated at 46°13'N latitude and 26°47'E longitude.
Culture
Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of the city, whose inhabitants are predominantly Romanian Orthodox. St Nicholas Day, celebrated on 6 December, is Oneşti municipal day.
