The 1987 United States Army contribution to the mostly-navy Earnest Will operation. The navy, confronted with the task for protecting Kuwaiti oil tankers flying the American flag in the war-torn Persian Gulf required small, lightweight helicopter gunships. The American army recently secretly acquired the AH-6 gunship for its special operations forces. These aircraft were based on navy ships and barges in the region where they took part in the destruction of the Iranian Navy Praying Mantis.
